Medical.routedoctor.com
Patients waiting for an operation can check their surgeon’s success rate on a website created to increase transparency in the health service.
The database will make it easier to pick a consultant on the basis of their skill and experience rather than having to rely on a GP referral, according to the surgeon behind Medical.routedoctor.com.
Information on the site includes the average time taken to complete an operation and the percentage of patients who suffer serious side-effects following the procedure.

| Transparency: Patients will now be able to check up on their surgeon with the launch of a new database |
Urologist Stephen Keoghane, who set up the website, said: ‘It means that someone waiting for a hip replacement, for example, will be able to find out how many of these operations a particular surgeon has done and how he or she rates against other doctors in their peer group.’
The site urges users to treat the data with caution because medical results are often influenced by factors such as living conditions and household income in the area.
Prostate cancer specialist Christopher Eden, of the Hampshire Clinic in Basingstoke, has posted his results on the site.
He said: ‘This is something I have been wanting to see for a long time. It is an anachronism in 2010 that patients have so little oversight over surgeons.’
But Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients Association, said: ‘Having lots of different surgeons publishing data will just cause confusion for patients.’
The British Medical Association added that the statistics could be misinterpreted if taken out of context.
The Department of Health said it will announce details of its own ‘NHS information revolution’ in the autumn, giving people access to more facts.
